St. Mary's Offers Specialized Mental Health Treatment

St. Mary’s Adult Mental Health Unit supports the Mission of St. Mary’s by providing holistic Mental Health treatment in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Sometimes people face challenges that become overwhelming. In these cases, support and treatment in a safe environment is required to provide stability, hope and direction. These persons may be our family members, friends or ourselves.

The experienced Interdisciplinary Team on St. Mary’s Adult Mental Health Unit includes the Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses, Mental Health Technicians, Utilization Management Nurse, Senior Therapist, Recreation Therapist, Dietician, Spiritual Care, Hospitalist and OT/PT Services. Alternative therapies, such as Pet Therapy, are also provided. Treatment modalities include Individual and Group Therapy, Education Therapy, Recreation Therapy, as well as inpatient and outpatient ECT. The coordination of continued care and treatment post hospitalization is significant.

St. Mary’s Adult Mental Health Unit is located on the third floor of St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute building. Patients may be admitted by Psychiatrists with St. Mary’s admitting privileges. These patients require short-term treatment for an acute phase of a psychiatric illness or for stabilization of an acute episode requiring the safety and security of a mental health unit.

The Adult Mental Health Unit does not provide primary substance abuse treatment but may treat an accompanying acute mental health condition and then coordinate post-discharge substance abuse treatment. Patients are assessed in the St. Mary’s Emergency Department by a Master’s Prepared Social Worker (Intake Specialist) who consults with the St. Mary’s Psychiatrist on call — Dr. Gene Flick, Medical Director, or Dr. Juan Cabrera, Jr., to determine the level of care supported.

In addition, Psychiatric Consults are provided on the Acute St. Mary’s Medical Units. A consult requires a physician order. The ordering unit completes and faxes the Consult Request to the ED Intake Specialist and calls to alert them to the fax. Unless the order is specifically written for the Psychiatrist to see the patient, the patient is first assessed by the Intake Specialist who then consults with the Psychiatrist on call.

We appreciate the opportunity to work with patients who may need inpatient or consultative mental health services. If you are a mental health care provider and have questions concerning a patient’s need for inpatient mental health services. You may contact the unit at 812.485.5025 to determine which on-call psychiatrist is available for consultation. If you have other questions regarding mental health services, you may contact the Director, Robin Richards, directly at 812.485.5002.
