Take care of your health now, so you can be there for your family later.

Why Mammograms Are Important

The American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammogram for women aged 40 and above.  When it comes to breast cancer detection, earlier is better and mammograms detect about 80 to 90 percent of breast cancers in women without symptoms.  Breast cancer is the leading cancer among women of many Asian and Pacific Islander groups in the United States.  Simply being a woman and getting older puts you at risk for breast cancer. The risk increases if your mother, sister or daughter has had breast cancer.

Symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • Lump or thickening of breast or underarm area
  • Nipple tenderness
  • Change in breast shape/size
  • Nipple turned inward toward the breast
  • Scaly, swollen, dimpled or red skin on the breast

Unfortunately, many women do not know they have breast cancer until it is advanced.  Finding the disease early with mammograms and breast exams by your doctor or nurse can save your life. St. Mary's Breast Center has the latest advances in breast cancer screening.  That includes digital mammography read by two board-certified dedicated breast radiologists, Dr. Charles Lackey and Dr. Kathryn Bryan, who maintain their offices on site.  They only review breast images, so mammogram results are typically available the same visit.

For yourself and your family, please call the Breast Center at (812) 485-4437 to schedule your exam and mammogram today.  Saturday morning mammogram appointments are available by appointment on selected dates throughout the year.

Patients may also see a breast surgeon on site, decreasing the time from mammogram to treatment and providing you with complete continuum of care.
