St. Mary's Warrick Introduces Project Search
01/29/2010

Project SEARCH and its partners are holding a Ribbon Cutting and an Open House to introduce the work-site based, school-to-work program for students with disabilities to the community. The Ribbon Cutting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27th at St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital in Boonville. The Open House will take place that evening from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Boonville High School.

Project SEARCH Indiana is a total work immersion program for students with disabilities in their last year of high school, which provides training, education and employment opportunities. The program is a collaborative effort. The job training site is St. Mary's Warrick Hospital, with job coaching and accommodations provided by Southern Indiana Resource Solutions, or SIRS. Funding is furnished by the State of Indiana’s Family & Social Services Administration and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. Technical assistance is supplied by Indiana University’s Indiana Institute on Disability and Community. The Gibson-Pike-Warrick Special Education Cooperative provides the educational component and job coaching.

Currently, Project SEARCH has four interns who are in the process of completing three, 10-week rotations during the school year. The program’s goal is to have 10 to 12 interns for a school year. The interns are given support through on-the-job training and class room instruction.

A typical day for an intern includes classroom instruction on a variety of work skills, such as workplace etiquette, budgeting, dressing for success and transportation to and from the job site. The intern also receives on-the-job training for specific tasks. Interns end their day with reflection, problem solving, planning and journaling their key learnings. This process allows them to have total immersion in the workplace, which facilitates the learning process through continuous feedback and the development of new marketable job skills. The program’s ultimate goal is competitive employment utilizing the skills learned.
