Bipolar is a serious but treatable mental disease.  It is a disorder of the brain marked by extreme changes in mood, energy, thinking and behavior.

Symptoms of mania and depression include:

Mania

  • Heightened mood and self-confidence
  • Excessive irritability
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Grandiose thoughts
  • Racing speech and thoughts
  • Impulsiveness, poor judgment, easily distracted
  • Reckless behavior

Depression

  • Prolonged sadness
  • Significant changes in appetite and sleep patterns
  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
